MOST COMMONLY USED ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS:
- Saccharin (Brand name: Sweet N Low) 300 times sweeter than sugar; comes in pink sachets.
- Aspartame (Brand names: Nutra Sweet, Equal) 160 to 200 times sweeter than sugar; comes in blue sachets.
- Sucralose (Brand name: Splenda) 500 to 600 times sweeter than sugar; comes in yellow sachets.
1. WHAT ARE THEY?
An Artificial sweetener is a food additive that duplicates the effect of sugar in taste, but often with less food energy (i.e. calories). Most sweeteners are artificially synthesized compounds, and which is why the sensation of sweetness that they cause is sometimes notably different from real sugar. Thus, they are often used in complex mixtures that achieve the most natural sweet sensation. (For example, Equal is the sweetener aspartame mixed with maltodextrin, a chemical compound that provides the “sugar texture”.)
2. ARE THEY REALLY SAFE TO USE?
Many studies have suggested links between the use of artificial sweeteners – particularly saccharin and aspartame – and the development of a wide variety of health problems, like brain tumors. However, no link has, to date, been conclusively proven, and so the medical community continues to endorse the use of sugar substitutes to diabetes and weight-watchers.
3. NO, REALLY NOW, IS THERE NO DOWNSIDE TO USING SUGAR SUBSTITUTES?
The only problem I see with artificial sweeteners is how it lulls users into complacency – people who use sugar substitutes think that if they drink a diet soft drink during the day, it’s alright to gorge on a bag of M&Ms in the evening, but it doesn’t work that way! The artificial sweetener is supposed to help you cut down on the naturally sweet stuff, and not serve as the opening act to the main event.

Tsaka pwede ba, mas naniniwala ako na pag oras mo na…then you’ll die! Period!
